The limbic system is an ancient region of our brain that has the job of keeping us safe. It pushes us away from situations that are dangerous and encourages us to move towards situations that are good for our survival.
The limbic system does this by releasing chemicals that create threat and reward feelings in us. It is these - mostly unconscious - feelings that direct our behaviour.
Watch this video to find out how the limbic system unconsciously but powerfully influences our behaviour and our choices.
For this exercise, bring to mind a situation that mildly upset or frustrated you. Take a moment to jot that down in your notebook. You will refer to this situation during the video exercise that follows.
This next video gives you a short experience of the emotional states created by your limbic system.
These states are your brain’s way of informing you that a situation is bad for your survival (a threat response) or that it is good for survival (a reward response) and a sign that you should do this more.
You have seen how over-sensitive the limbic system can be in its drive to protect you. But the limbic system is not a bad thing. It is a large part of what makes us human and it helps us with these five aspects of our life experience.
