How did it really go when the judges were tired?

Researchers from Princeton University found that judges granted parole in just 10% of cases later in the day compared to 70% in the morning. The study concluded that this was because the judges were so tired of making decisions by the time they heard the afternoon cases that they chose the easier, less risky decision: denying parole.

When your executive function tires

So, what was was causing the judges to choose the easier decisions when they were tired? The answer is that the executive functions in their brains were low on energy.

Tapping into your brain’s executive function and keeping it topped up with energy will help you manage your limbic system’s reactions, improving how you relate to others.

Coming up in this chapter

In this chapter, you will learn how to:

  • tap into executive functions in your brain - to collaborate and work well with others
  • have more patience and empathy - to  relate to your colleagues and maintain good relationships
  • increase your resilience - to navigate better through uncertainty and complexity
